Content that knows who paid for it:
tiers, trials and renewals handled correctly
A paywall is not just a login check, it is recurring billing that has to handle failed cards and renewals without losing a paying member, trial periods that convert instead of churn, and content gating that applies consistently across every page, video or download it should cover. We build the whole system, not just the lock icon.
What it is
A membership and paywall system is the combination of tiered access control, recurring billing and the operational handling of what happens when billing does not go smoothly, a card declines, a trial ends, a member cancels. The access control part looks simple; the billing lifecycle underneath it is where most home-grown paywalls actually fail, usually by either locking out paying members on a temporary card issue or failing to lock out members who should have lost access weeks ago.
When you need it (and when you do not)
You need this once content, features or community access are tiered by payment, a free tier and a paid tier, several paid tiers, a trial that converts to paid. A publication with premium articles, a course or community platform with member-only content, or a product with a freemium-to-paid feature split all need this handled correctly, because billing edge cases, not the happy path, are what members actually notice.
You do not need a custom build if a single flat subscription with no tiers and no trial logic is genuinely all your product needs; a payment link or a simple Stripe Checkout integration can cover that without a full membership system.
How we build it
Billing runs through Stripe for most international products, or a local payment provider where your market’s card acceptance or currency needs call for it, with subscription, trial and proration logic handled by the provider’s subscription primitives rather than re-implemented from scratch, which avoids a long tail of billing bugs. The backend, Python/FastAPI or Node/TypeScript with PostgreSQL, maps subscription status (active, trialing, past-due, cancelled) to actual access, so the gating logic reads from one source of truth rather than duplicating billing state.
Failed payments get a retry schedule and a grace period before any downgrade, which keeps a temporary card issue from silently losing a paying member, something we treat as a default, not an afterthought. The member dashboard gives self-service upgrade, downgrade and cancellation, with correct proration, so a plan change does not need a support ticket. Content gating applies at whatever layer your product needs it, page-level, video-level, a downloadable file, or a community area, consistently enough that a member’s access matches their plan everywhere, not just on the pages someone remembered to protect.
What to watch
Billing logic has more edge cases than it looks like from the outside: time zone handling on renewal dates, proration on mid-cycle upgrades, what happens to access during a disputed charge. We build on the payment provider’s own subscription primitives specifically because they have already solved most of these edge cases, rather than re-inventing billing state machines ourselves.
Churn from failed payments, not cancellations, is often the larger and more fixable leak in a membership business; a retry schedule and grace period recover a meaningful share of what looks like churn but is actually an expired card. We build this in by default rather than treating it as optional.
Price and timeline
| Option | Price | What it covers | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-tier paywall | from $2,800 | One paid tier, billing, content gating, member dashboard | 3 to 5 weeks |
| Multi-tier membership | from $5,500 | Several tiers, trials, self-service plan changes, failed-payment handling | 5 to 8 weeks |
Running cost is the payment provider’s standard processing fee (typically 2 to 3.5% plus a fixed amount per transaction) with no separate platform fee from us.

FAQ
How much does a membership and paywall system cost?
From $2,800 for a single-tier paywall with recurring billing and content gating. A multi-tier membership system with trials, self-service upgrades and failed-payment handling typically runs $5,000 to $9,000.
Which payment providers do you support?
Stripe for most international billing, and local providers, Opn, LiqPay or a regional processor, where your market needs it for card acceptance rates or currency support. We also support crypto or Telegram Stars where that fits the product.
What happens when a member's card is declined?
A configurable retry schedule attempts the charge again over a few days, the member gets a grace period with access intact while retries run, and access downgrades automatically only after retries are exhausted, rather than cutting a paying member off on the first failed attempt.
Can members upgrade or downgrade without contacting us?
Yes, a self-service member dashboard handles plan changes, with the billing logic (prorating, next charge date) handled correctly rather than left as a manual support task.
Does this work for content, software features, and community access all at once?
Yes, the gating layer is built to apply consistently across whatever your product actually tiers, articles, video, downloadable files, feature flags, or access to a members-only community area.
