A course platform that tracks who actually learned something:
not just who clicked play

An LMS has to do more than host video: it tracks progress per lesson, grades quizzes, issues certificates that mean something, and gives an instructor visibility into who is actually learning versus who enrolled and vanished. We build this on your own infrastructure when a rented platform's limits start costing you more than the build would.

What it is

A learning management system structures content into courses, modules and lessons, tracks a learner’s actual progress through that structure rather than just whether they clicked play once, grades quizzes and assessments, and issues certificates that can be verified rather than just printed. The difference between an LMS and a plain video library is this tracking and assessment layer, which is most of the real engineering work.

When you need it (and when you do not)

You need this once you are running structured courses with a defined completion path, quizzes that need real scoring, or certificates that need to mean something to an employer or a licensing body. A certification or training business, corporate onboarding and compliance training, or any course product where completion and assessment data matter, not just video views, justify a real system.

You do not need a custom LMS if you are selling a handful of video lessons with no quiz, no certificate and no cohort structure; a simple video library with basic access control, see our video streaming platform page, is a lighter and cheaper fit for that.

How we build it

Course content structures into modules and lessons in PostgreSQL, with per-learner progress tracked at the lesson level, not just the course level, so an instructor can see exactly where a learner is, not just whether they finished. Video lessons integrate with a managed video host for playback (see our video streaming page) or host documents and slides directly where the content calls for it.

Quizzes and assessments support multiple question types with automatic scoring against a pass threshold you set, and for open-ended answers, an optional AI-assisted first pass on feedback, reviewed by an instructor rather than auto-graded blind. Certificates generate on completion with a unique verifiable code, so a certificate is not just a PDF anyone could recreate but a record checkable against our system.

The instructor dashboard surfaces enrollment, completion rate and quiz performance broken down by question, not just an overall score, which is usually what actually tells an instructor which part of a course is not landing. For training and certification businesses specifically, we have built the adjacent sales and content side, playbooks, FAQ, outreach sequences, for a real certification body, and that domain experience carries into how we structure the learning content itself.

What to watch

An LMS’s value depends entirely on course content quality, which we do not create; we build the system that tracks, assesses and certifies, and your subject matter experts build the curriculum. Scoping this clearly up front avoids the common trap of blaming the platform for a content problem.

Certificate verification needs a real policy: who can issue one, what it certifies, how long it stays valid. We build the technical verification; the governance behind what a certificate means is a decision for your organization, especially where a certificate carries professional or regulatory weight.

Price and timeline

Course platform from $4,500 Modules, lessons, progress tracking, quizzes, certificates 5 to 7 weeks
Advanced LMS from $9,000 Cohort features, instructor analytics by question, AI components 7 to 12 weeks

Running cost is usually $20 to $100 a month in hosting, plus video delivery costs if lessons are video-based.

FAQ

How much does a custom LMS cost?

From $4,500 for a course platform with structured lessons, progress tracking, quizzes and certificates. A system with cohort features, instructor analytics by question, and an AI component typically runs $8,000 to $15,000.

Why build custom instead of using Teachable or Thinkific?

Those platforms are a solid default for a straightforward course business, low cost, fast to launch. We build custom when you need a specific certification format, integration with your own CRM or HR system, a cohort structure those platforms do not support well, or when their per-student fees stop making sense at your enrollment numbers.

Can certificates be verified by someone else?

Yes, each certificate generates a unique code or link that anyone, an employer, a licensing body, can check against our system to confirm it is genuine, rather than a PDF anyone could recreate.

Does the LMS work for corporate training as well as public courses?

Yes, the same structure, modules, progress tracking, quizzes, certificates, works for a public course business and for internal corporate training, with the access model (public enrollment versus assigned to specific employees) configured differently for each.

Can an AI answer learner questions about the course content?

Yes, as an optional layer: a model can answer questions grounded in the actual course material, with a clear fallback to a human instructor for anything outside that scope, the same closed-tool approach we use in other AI agent builds.
